George Fergusson

Vice-Chair

George served as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Bermuda 2012–16 and has been a Vice-Chair of the Bermuda Society since 2017. After education inScotland, New Zealand, England and Scotland, he joined the British Civil Service, serving variously in the Northern Ireland Office (London, Belfast and Dublin); the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (Seoul, Boston, and High Commissioner in Wellington, New Zealand)/Governor of Pitcairn); and the Cabinet Office (as head of the Foreign Policy Team and later as Senior Advisor in the UK Governance Group). A career highlight was being a member of the British government’s negotiating team for the 1998 Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland. George’s current activities include serving as Chair of the Northcote Trust, an educational charity supporting British post-graduate students in Australia; trustee of the British-Irish Association, which promotes better relations between communities in Northern Ireland and between the UK and Ireland; and Chair of the UK Friends of the National Museum of Bermuda.
